Property History

The Kirk was once the heart of a much larger community. It was built to serve the West side of Shetland with most of the congregation coming to worship by boat. There were few roads and most of Shetland's transportation was by boat, which is why the Old Kirk is located on the water's edge. At low tide the remains of an Iron Age Broch can be still be seen, it is likely that much of the stone used in the Kirk came from this structure when it was constructed in the 18th Century.

The Kirk has been carefully looked after since its deconsecration and, in recent years, lovingly converted with a view to retain as much of the original character as possible.

Location

The Old Kirk is located on the West side of mainland Shetland. This enviable location allows guests the ability to explore all of the mainland and Shetland's other islands with ease. You are equidistant to all of the ferry ports and other places you may wish to explore.

The Old Kirk is a stunning hidden gem, immersed in nature and a unique home. Surrounded by rolling sheep fields and just meters from the water's edge, you can enjoy Shetland's stunning biodiversity from your doorstep. With the otters playing in the shallows, inquisitive seals popping up to say hello and a host of seabirds around you, it is a nature lovers paradise. The home itself is a magical converted church with a classic Scottish cottage kitchen and the original altar restored to its former glory. The Old Kirk is just as beautiful inside as the nature that surrounds it. Having stayed there three on three occasions, every trip has been more perfect that the last. Highly recommended.

Quite possibly one of our most memorable and favourite holidays, and I cannot think of a more ideal place to stay on Shetland. Simply but so cleverly done, warm, and incredibly comfortable with enough space for everyone to be together, escape, read or work. The views over the water are spectacular with magical sunsets. One feels totally isolated while actually having all you could need within a short drive. The Kirk is perfectly situated to explore Shetland, we headed out on foot often, or drove to further away beaches, waterfalls cliff paths - all so beautiful, it was impossible to pick our favourite. We came with friends and had the time of our lives, but now we will be coming back with our children, we cannot wait!
